Rock music, contrary to popular belief, is not dead. The world is changing and that extends to music as well. Old rock conventions and standards that have been rehashed since the 90s will not be so interesting in this era. Rock music--especially rock--has to change and adapt with the times.
That is why mainstream is out, out in my opinion. Though some mainstream acts have pushed out solid releases this year, it is the underground scene that has really stolen the show. Our five best albums span between shoegaze (the best being considered nu-gaze), post-rock, and alternative/indie.
Thankfully, 2013 has given us quite a few good to great albums from those subgenres. So, without further ado, I present to you our list of the five best rock albums from 2013.
1. The Joy Formidable-Wolf's Law
This Welsh rock group has only released two full-length albums. Their first was impressive in its own right. With Wolf's Law, the band takes their sound to new heights and, by so doing, blow the doors off everything they have done in the past. This is a rock album chock-full of catchy choruses and bridges tinged with deep echoes. There is literally so much to this album that posting one track can hardly do it justice. Check out a couple of great tracks below.
2. The History of Colour TV- Emerald Cures Chic Ills
Pure shoegaze is an art that dates back to the early 1990s. Over time, bands have adapted that concept. In addition to electronic and guitar loops, this German band incorporates dark, spaced-out melodies and a certain metal-like flair for noise. This may sound like a lot to handle, but the package is masterfully put together. This is a great album and every track has its place. Check out the first single from Emerald Cures Chic Ills here.
3. Sigur Ros-Kveikur
Sigur Ros is one of those post rock bands that can't put out a sub-par release. They have been doing it a long time and remain one of the best in the genre. Kveikur represents a somewhat darker approach, which is more akin to what post-rock is believed to be: stretched out, apocalyptic song structures with dreary melodies and no vocals. Although Sigur Ros does use vocals, the music remains very much post-rock. This album is being hailed by many publications as one of the best albums of the year and it is no mystery why. They are perhaps the best band in Iceland. Check out a great track below.
4. Spc-Eco-Sirens and Satellites
Nu-gaze music blended successfully with electronic sounds and crystal-clear vocals is a rare treat. This British group puts it all together on Sirens and Satellites. The band's signature sound of looped, reverb-laden guitars melded with electronic grooves is on full display here. The best element may be the vocals. Spc-Eco have certainly stepped up their game in that department. Check out an outstanding track from their latest album here.
5. Monochromie-Enlighten Yourself While You Sleep
Ambient post-rock with crunching waves of static seem to the be the theme on French band Monochromie's new album. This is a slight departure from their excellent debut. Everything the debut album presented remains present on this album, while the quality is kicked up yet another notch. This is outstanding production occasionally disguised as lo-fi buzz rock. The most important qualifier I can mention is ambient. Though the album is very much a post-rock release, its ambient grace elevates it above the crowd. Check out a track below.

Sigur Ros-Kveikur review

I didn't really take Sigur Ros seriously until sometime in 2012 after their previous album "Valtari" was released. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps the band's name didn't resonate with me. But after I really took some time to listen to that record, I came to like the band's sound a lot more.
Since "Valtari," Sigur Ros has been hard at work, quickly releasing another album. This one didn't really have time to make it to the highly anticipated category because it was announced and released in a very short time span.
If you have browsed a record store lately, you might have seen the new album, "Kveikur" gracing shelves. The cover art is simple, yet attention grabbing.
With this new album, Sigur Ros have adapted and enhanced their experimental approach to accessible post rock. "Kveikur" sees the band incorporating more ominous textures, and darker, deeper sounds. With enough distortion to keep true to the post-rock values the band is known for, accessible pop sensibilities and broken bits of alternative styled sounds peek through the haze of atmospheric grandeur. This results in a sweeping, majestic sound that is quite impressive, even for seasoned fans of this Icelandic post-rock group.
There is plenty to enjoy on this disc. The opener, Brenninstein immediately leaves its mark and sets a tone for the remainder of the release. Most of the tracks continue with similar workmanship. This album has enough distortion to keep hard core post-rock fans interested, yet enough pop styling to attract new listeners. As good as "Valtari" proved to be, "Kveikur" is even better. This is a fantastic release that should earn its way into the libraries of many listeners.
Sigur Ros is known as a standard of post-rock and is referenced alongside many mentions of post-rock. This is notable, because the collection of well-known post-rock bands is sparse. Instead of simply adhering to post-rock standards, however, this band experiments and truly pushes the boundary limitations of the genre. Listen to Brenninstein below. Good Charlotte and Garbage
Hello everyone. Today the plan is to blog two bands that start with the letter G. As I was looking through my music I found that I had many male artists to choose from and not very many females. I ended up choosing Garbage and Good Charlotte. These are two great bands who were really mainstream in the late 90's and are not heard very much on the radio today which is a shame since both bands are incredibly talented. Lets start with Good Charlotte.
Good Charlotte is an American pop/punk band out of Maryland. They started singing in 1996 and have released 5 studio albums with talk of a 6th on in the future. This band attributes its sound to bands like sum 41 and blink 182 so if you like those bands you will love Good Charlotte. The first song I choose to write about is Emotionless off the off the Young and The Hopeless album. This song was written by Benji and Joel Madden. These two are brothers and wrote every single song on this album. This is one of their slower songs off this album. It's a very emotional song talking about the boys relationship with their father. As you listen to this song you can really feel how the abandonment from their father left them with many scars. The lyrics to this song are powerful and heartfelt. I think the use of the acoustic guitar makes this song real and believable. It really make you think about the relationship you have with your own father. Check it out below.
The second song I chose is a lot more upbeat and fun. I really like the Dance Hall Album ( I don't Wanna Be In Love). This song is found on the Good Morning Revival album. This song is really upbeat and has great rhythm. As soon as the song starts with the guitar and the drums you are totally ready to jam along with them. This song has intense dance vibes. This song is about how to get over past relationships and if it is worth it to move on. Please listen to it and let me know what you think.
The lucky female band that I chose a couple of song from is Garbage. Garbage is an American alternative band with lead vocals by Scottish singer Shirley Manson. This group found instant stardom with their debut album Garbage. Unfortunately they were never able to live up to the fame from their first album. They went on hiatus a few times over the years and have reunited in 2010 to record a new album. It was released on YouTube and made the UK billboard top one hundred chart at number 13. The first song I would like to share with you is off their debut album entitled I'm Only Happy When It Rains. This song is takes me back to high school when everyone was into the grunge thing. I think that this song kind of makes fun of that. I like how it is kind of grungy sounding though but her vocals are crystal clear. I like that this song is upbeat and I love the additional emotion that the guitar adds. Take a trip back to the 90's by listening to this track below.
The second song I want to share with you is I Think I'm Paranoid off the album Version 2.0. I have a confession to make, the first time that I heard this song was while playing some version of rock band. But I really enjoyed playing this song on their and it ended up being one of my favorites. Why?? It's really fun to sing. Finch and Fiona Apple
Today's blog is about two of my favorite artists that start with the letter F. I chose Fiona Apple and Finch. I feel like both these artists are lesser known than others I could have chosen. Plus they both sing totally different types of music and so it is fun to play them right after each other. Let's start today with Fiona Apple.
Fiona Apple gained stardom in 1996 with her album Tidal. If you have heard of her it is probably because songs off this album became very popular in the late 90's. As an artist Fiona has exceptional talent with great vocals plus she writes her own music and plays the piano. Criminal earned Miss Apple a Grammy award and this is one of her songs that I would like to share with you. This is a great piano rock song. It is not often that the two can be grouped together in the rock genre which is another reason why I like this song so much. I also appreciate the bluesy tone in her voice. This song is about a woman who lures men using her sexuality. The lyrics do this song justice and so does the music video which has been posted below. I hope you enjoy it.
The second song I have chosen is her rendition of Sally's song off the Nightmare Before Christmas Special Editon Soundtrack. I think she does a great version of this song. There is talk about who did this song better justice between Fiona Apple and Amy Lee. They both do a great job it's just that both ladies sing differently and I really like Fionna's version. It's a little darker and so I think that it fits in with the theme of the movie a lot more. I also think and this might be weird but Fiona and Sally kind of look a lot a like so it's believable to me. This music behind this song is very mellow and the vocals are outstanding. Finch is a post rock hardcore band from California. They started singing in 1999 where they recorded a couple albums together before they took a break in 2006. The band has reunited and taken another break since then. They are planning a reunion in 2012. Most of the members of this band have projects on the side and so they have been very busy. The song that I would like to share with you is the title track of their first album What It Is To Burn. I like this song. I actually don't mind the screaming. I think that the vocals are great I mean Nate Barcalow has a great voice when he's not screaming ;). I googled what this song is about and Nate claims that her wrote this song from the viewpoint of a man in hell sending his loved one a letter. Makes sense to me. You can listen to this song below.
The second song I wanted to share with you is also off this album. OK I have to tell you that this is actually the only Finch album I like. I listened to their second album Say Hello To Sunshine and I actually only found one song that I thought I would be able to listen to. I'm just saying they changed their music to have a more harsher sound and that wasn't for me though lots of their fans liked it more because it made them fit better into the post hardcore genre. Anyway I would like to share the song Ender with you. This song is slower than than some of the others on this album. I like this because as most of you know I like the slower songs better because I can sing along with them. I'm weird I already know this. The vocals and the lyrics for this song are great. I enjoy the soft slow guitar in the beginning of this song. I like how the music starts out really mellow and then picks up the pace as you get more into the meaning of the song. Evanescence and Emery
Today I have chosen two great bands that start with the letter E. I would like to share some music from Evanescence and Emery. These two bands sing totally different types of music. Evanescence sings rock and Emery is more post rock hardcore.
Evanescence was started in 1995. Amy Lee is the main singer and the other members in her band change a lot. Their album Fallen came out in 2003 and sold over 17 million copies. Their second album Open Door came out in 2006 and has sold over 6 million copies worldwide. I think that Amy has an amazing voice and to pair it with rock and metal music is fantastic. The first song I wanted to share with you is Hello off the Fallen album. I chose this song because I know that all of you are familiar with Bring Me Back To Life and Immortal. I wanted to show you another incredible song off this album. This song starts out with beautiful piano and Amy's voice. The combination of the two is pretty much the bulk of this song. I think that this song is powerful because of this. Towards the end violins are brought in and it brings this song to a new emotional depth. I really think that if you give this song a listen you will like it every bit as much as the singles that you've heard on the radio. Enjoy.
The second song that I have chosen to share with you is Your Star from their second album Open Door. This song is a little slower also. I know that some of you probably like their fast songs better but I wanted to share the slower ones with you because they don't get radio play. This song is a sad song about a girl who wanders alone in the darkness. It sounds depressing but some how Amy Lee can take a song like this and with her vocals make it emotional and real. This song adds drums and the guitar to add demention to the vocals. Please listen to it below.
The second band that I chose is Emery. I first heard this band at Vans Warp Tour in Utah. They came out in 2001. They are considered to be a postrock hardcore band. This band hasn't sold millions of copies of their music but they are great. They continue to release albums full of great music. They have released 5 albums is in the last 10 years. The first song I chose is off their The Weaks End album entitled Walls. I like this song. The song starts out with hardcore vocals and then brings in smooth vocals and catchy guitar riffs. Give them a listen below.
The second song that I chose is Crumbling from this bands latest album We Do What We Want. This track is a little more mellow than their other songs. I like the lyrics and I love the harmony of their blended voices. I like the subtle guitar and the drums in the background. The lyrics to this song are great. I like how the music really reflects the feeling of lyrics. It feels like the walls are crumbling down around you. This band is great. AFI and Avril Lavigne
I was again suffering insomnia like I always do and so I was listening to my I-Pod. I was thinking to myself about what music I would like to blog about. I was pondering about all of the great artists that I have and wondered if I had to choose just one artist from every letter of the alphabet what my favorites would be. So I'm going to share them with you. I don't have a lot of new music because I tend to follow my favorite bands around so some of this might be really familiar to you. I just think that it is fun to go back and listen to the music that you kind of forget about. So I have two choices whose bands or names start with the letter A. I decided to go with one female and one male. I wanted to share two or three songs from each. I wanted to do this because artists grow over the years and their sound can change so here they are.
Avril Lavigne. Avril started singing in 1999. I remember the first time I heard Complicated. I had to run out and buy that Cd. I've been a fan ever since. Avril sings songs with catchy melodies and fun pop music. The first track that I want to share with you is Slipped Away from her album Under My Skin. This song is beautiful and meaningful in many ways. Avril dedicated this song to her Grandfather after his death. Please listen to it below.
The second track I chose is Alice. Avril recorded this track for Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland. I though that this track was an interesting twist from the song above. This song is kind of loud and in your face but it's great.
The last track I would like to share comes from her latest album Goodbye Lullaby. This CD is a little more mellow than her previous albums and so the music is about more serious topics. I chose the song 4Real. I like this song. It has beautiful lyrics and Avril's vocals are fantastic. I also really like that this girl can play her own guitar. I hope you enjoy it.
For my other artist I choose the musical styling of AFI (A Fire Inside). I must tell you that the first time I heard this group I wasn't really a fan. We used to get into trouble playing this band at work because my boss hated it. But the more I listened to it the more it grew on me. The lyrics to these songs are actually brilliant. I think that Davey Havok and the others who help him write their music are amazing. AFI has been together since 1991. They have replaced a few of their members over the years but have retained their original sound. Here is Silver and Cold from their album Sing the Sorrow. I love this song because of the great intro. I love how they used the sound of the rain and then the soft piano followed by the guitar and the drums I also like that this is one of their songs where you can understand all the lyrics. This is one of their slower songs and I think that Davey has a really nice voice and so it's nice to see that come out.
The second song I chose is Prelude 12 21. It's just a really short intro or "Prelude" to their album Decemberunderground but it's so fun and catchy. This song is a perfect introduction to this album. Listen to it below.
My third choice for them is The Missing Frame. This song is also on Decemberunderground. I like this track. I think that it is upbeat and has a great vibe. I like the guitar and the fast pace of this song. Keep in mind that there are so many great songs from AFI and if you like songs that are a little harsher in vocals check out their Cd's because they truly have something for everyone I just happen to like the more mellow of their songs. Keep in mind that there are so many great songs from AFI and if you like songs that are a little harsher in vocals check out their Cd's because they truly have something for everyone I just happen to like the more mellow of their songs. Deftones and Verses new singles
Today I decided to review a couple of songs from artists that I don't normally listen to. So the first song is from the band Verses. I have never heard of them before. As soon as the song started I was totally into it. Sadly I have no information on this band. I know that they are a band from the UK and have a few songs available for download from I-Tunes. The website that I heard this song from says this is their debut song from their album Come To Life. It comes out on the 10th I am really considering purchasing this album if the rest of the tracks sound like this one. This song has a great guitar intro. It has the great drum line that your favorite songs have and great intro vocals. The lyrics of the song are great. It's all about accepting the things that have happened to you because that is what makes you who you are. Check out Who We Are from Verses below. The next song that I would like to review is Tempest by the Deftones. The Deftones are an alternative band that came out it 1988. This band has many different albums and you have heard a lot of their songs on movie soundtracks. Tempest is a new single off of their upcoming album Koi No Yokan due out on the 13th of November. This song has a great suspenseful intro. It kind of beckoned me to listen to listen to it. I did and I liked it. This song has great guitar riffs and vocals from their lead singer Chino Moreno. Check it out.

Album Review: Silversun Pickups-Neck of the Woods
Just as genre classifications can be unfair to artists, so too can band comparisons. Silversun Pickups stand as a good example of the inequites of band comparisons. This band is compared to Smashing Pumpkins more often than Smashing Pumpkins is. In this case, I can see where people get the comparison because, especially in the vocal department, Silversun Pickups does bear some resemblance to the aforementioned band.
Particularly in their earlier years, Smashing Pumpkins was more of an alternative and progressive metal-leaning group. In this regard, Silversun Pickups is not even comparable. This group, from Los Angeles, plays an indie, alternative flavor of rock music built upon dueling guitars and shimmering vocals with the the occasional accentual shoegaze reverb sound.
Many of the tracks on this disc kick off with acoustic preludes, and soulful singing, which then builds in tempo and intensity throughout the song. Compared to thier previous effort, Swoon, Neck of the Woods offers more of everything. This is really tasty music with excellent harmonizing between instrumental sections and tight singing.
This is a memorable album as well, in that most of the tracks are sing-along worthy with hooks that run deep enough to catch listeners and not let go even through repeated listens. I ought to know this first hand, as I listened to this album three straight times upon its release due to a malfunctioning download from iTunes (which has since been resolved).
Neck of the Woods is an album worthy of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Listen to the album's lead single, Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings) below. It is definitely worth hearing.
